Public consultation on fake news and online disinformation

January, 2018

Status: Closed

The Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology is seeking input from the EU citizens, social media platforms, news organisations (broadcasters, print, news agencies, online media and fact-checkers), academia and civil society organisations about the dissemination of fake news online.

The results of this public consultation will help to assess the effectiveness of current actions by market players and other stakeholders, and the potential need for scaling them up and/or through the introduction of new actions to address different types of fake news.

The consultation will collect information on:
  • Definition of fake information and their spread online;
  • Assessment of measures already taken by platforms, news media companies and civil society organisations to counter the spread of fake information online;
  • Scope for future actions to strengthen the quality of information and prevent the spread of disinformation online.
